Depression counselling
Depression can feel like we are at the bottom of a well with no way out. The painful emotions involved with depression are most often guilt and regret, however irritability and anger are also strongly associated with depression.
Other symptoms include difficulty concentrating, poor appetite (or increased appetite,) fatigue, insomnia and a loss of interest in things previously enjoyed. An important first step in treating depression is instilling hope that depression is treatable.
Treatment for depression involves an exploration of values before assisting clients in setting realistic goals for behaviour activation. The repeated act of setting goals, and following through and completing these goals helps clients regain a sense of agency over their lives. These repeated acts foster accountability. Clients begin to re-engage in life, by completing meaningful activities aligned with their values.
Clients are often surprised when depression begins to lift. They recognize that they have a renewed energy and motivation and may catch themselves laughing. They seek social connections once again. Feelings of worthlessness fade and are replaced with a sense of well-being and improved self-esteem.
“Mindfulness is about love and loving life. When you cultivate this love, it gives you clarity and compassion for life and your actions happen in accordance with that.”
